Day by Day Itinerary

Edinburgh Old Town, Harry Potter Inspiration & Dark History Walking Tour

The adventure begins in the heart of Edinburgh, where we meet for Rob’s famous Harry Potter & Horrible History walking tour of the Old Town. We’ll explore winding closes, the Royal Mile, and Edinburgh Castle, uncovering the city’s most iconic sights and stories.

Along the way, we’ll dive into the real inspiration behind Harry Potter, visiting places linked to J.K. Rowling’s writing and the atmosphere that helped shape the wizarding world. You’ll also hear tales of Edinburgh’s darker past  from executions and graveyards to the characters and events that give the city its famously haunted reputation. By the end of the tour, you’ll have experienced Edinburgh’s Old Town through its mix of history, legend, and the inspiration behind one of the world’s most loved book series.

Epic Scottish Castles, Glencoe and the Hagrids Hut

The journey heads north west into the Trossachs National Park for breakfast where we will prepare ourselves for a day of exploring some of Scotland’s most enchanting castle ruins: Doune, Finlarig, and Kilchurn. Then drive through Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes, locally known as ‘the valley of the weeping’. Here we will head up to where Hagrid’s Hut was located in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Our final stop for the day will be the vibrant coastal town of Oban, the seafood capital of Scotland, where we will spend the night.

On the third day, we wake up in the beautiful seaside town of Oban, enjoying incredible views over the western islands named the Inner Hebrides, including the Isles of Mull and Kerrera. Our first stop is Steall Falls, the incredible waterfall which is used as a backdrop in the Triwizard Tournament. After this you have two options:

Option one: Board the 10:15am Jacobite Steam Train, a magical ride through the Scottish Highlands.
Option two: View the Jacobite from the Glenfinnan Viaduct and visit Dumbledore’s grave.

We begin our day on Eigg by hopping onto e-bikes to breeze across the island’s scenic tracks. Our first stop is the magical Singing Sands, where the white beach literally “sings” beneath your feet as you gaze over to the peaks of Rum. Next, we delve into the island’s dramatic past at Massacre Cave, a site of a haunting clan battle, before marveling at the soaring, natural architecture of Cathedral Cave. We’ll end the day beneath the shadow of the mighty An Sgùrr, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of this community-owned gem.

We begin with the legendary hike to the Old Man of Storr, standing beneath its jagged basalt towers for a panoramic view of the Sound of Raasay. From ancient stones to prehistoric tracks, we’ll visit the shoreline to find Dinosaur Footprints preserved in the rock before a lunch stop in the colorful harbor of Portree. Our afternoon is spent chasing the “hidden” Skye: a short walk to the double-tiered Rha Falls and an exploration of the otherworldly, cone-shaped hills of the Fairy Glen. We conclude the day with a touch of history at Kilmuir Cemetery and the dramatic cliffside ruins of Duntulm Castle.

Weather permitting we will attack the biggest hike of the trip. We head into the Black Cuillin mountain range for one of the only hikeable summits of Sgùrr na Banachdich in area. Known as the “Smallpox Peak,” this trail offers a manageable yet exhilarating ascent into the heart of Skye’s ancient volcano. As we climb, the scenery is outrageously breathtaking, bird’s-eye views of the neighbouring peaks and the Atlantic far below. After reaching the summit, we’ll descend through the rocky corries, perhaps stopping to soak our feet in a cool mountain stream, before returning home safely.

Our final morning begins with Rob’s hidden hike, a secret local trail for one last panoramic look at the wild Highlands. We then visit the world-famous Eilean Donan Castle, standing guard over three great sea lochs, before stopping at the Falls of Invermoriston to watch the river surge beneath a historic Telford bridge. After a scenic drive along the mysterious shores of Loch Ness, we enter the towering Douglas Firs of The Hermitage to see the thundering Black Linn Falls. Our journey concludes at the legendary Birnam Oak, the last survivor of the forest made famous by Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

We spend our final morning in the heart of the Cairngorms at the star-shaped Braemar Castle, followed by a brisk walk to the hidden Balmoral Pyramid, a striking stone memorial with sweeping views of the Royal Estate. We then head to the coast for the tour’s most dramatic highlight: Dunnottar Castle, a formidable ruin perched atop jagged cliffs surrounded by the North Sea. Our journey concludes at the legendary Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the Queen Mother and the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth. As we finish our 8-day loop, we’ll reflect on a journey that spanned from wizarding wonders to the crown jewels of Scotland’s history.
