Harry Potter & History in Edinburgh
Welcome to all witches, wizards, muggles and magical creatures! Come join us on an all-round, interactive, 2 hour Edinburgh Harry Potter and History walking tour filled with dark tales of the city, J K Rowling’s life and Edinburgh castle viewpoints. Let our expert guide lead the way as you embark on a magical journey through the enchanting Old Town which will bring the streets around you to life through fun-filled storytelling.
What we will do
The tour will start at the National Library of Scotland where we will discuss the hardest period of J K Rowling’s life, how she began her venture in creating Harry Potter and what inspired her to create Diagon Alley. We will then find ourselves in the heart of the old town, where we will explore the gruesome history of public executions, find one of the most incredible viewpoints of Edinburgh Castle and navigate through the beautiful streets to arguably the most haunted graveyard in the UK, Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Set amidst the hauntingly beautiful gravestones and mausoleums we will firstly meet Greyfriars Bobby, the incredibly loyal dog who stole the hearts of the nation. Before discovering four gravestones (including the grave of Tom Riddle) which are commonly believed to have inspired J K Rowling to name characters in the Harry Potter universe. On the way out of the graveyard we revisit the realm of dark tales this time featuring the notorious Burke and Hare, and the Covenantors Prison.
Towards the end of the experience, you will visit two cafes where Jo spent her time writing the early chapters of her iconic books. Before finishing up at the City Chambers/Clam Shell depending on whether you have the courage to try the deep fried mars bar or/and haggis (recommended but not included for tours after midday)!
